A view of Porto Cervo Marina in summer.

With some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Porto Cervo is the “capital” of the Costa Smeralda. Porto Cervo is located in the province of Olbia-Tempio, in north-east Sardinia, about a half-hour drive north of Olbia Airport. It is one of the most renowned beach resort towns in Italy. It is a favorite playground of the rich and famous, who flock to the yacht-dotted marina for some fun in the sunshine. After all, it was with this intent that Prince Karim Aga Khan and other wealthy investors commissioned the town to be built. In the 1950s, Busiri-Vici, Jacques Couëlle, Savin Couëlle and Vietti, and other renowned designers and architects were tasked with imagining a perfect Mediterranean village for luxury travel. The result? This utopian little town of around 420 residents and undeniable charm. A holiday in Porto Cervo could serve no other purpose but to leave your worries behind and relax. Walking around town, taking in the ocean breeze, or sitting at a piazza will refresh your senses. You can also spend your days shopping at the Promenade du Port, playing golf at the top-class Pevero Golf Club, treating yourself to wine tastings, and indulging in some delicious cuisine that will delight your palate. Visit the Chiesa di Stella Maris for some incredible views of the Porto Cervo Marina, one of Sardinia’s largest and best-equipped yacht marinas. The picturesque white church sits on top of a hill with a beauty accentuated by its simplicity and surroundings. Whether you love visiting churches or not, the gorgeous view provided by this site makes it one of the must-see spots in Porto Cervo. While the town may be perfect for relaxing during the day, it does not lack nightlife. There are several bars and nightclubs where residents and visitors can throw back a few drinks and dance the night away under the starlit Mediterranean sky. As with most places in Sardinia, however, the real crown of Porto Cervo is its beaches. After all, no one ever hops over to this charming village unless they are looking to lie under the sun with the glistening sea before them. With clear waters giving way to a surreal turquoise and deep blues, calling Porto Cervo’s beaches beautiful would be a gross understatement. Cala Granu Beach is amongst the town’s most famous beaches. It is small, personal, and great for all ages. Those looking to settle for nothing but the best always head to the Spiaggia del Pevero. This astonishing beach is perfect for lounging around with a cocktail in your hand, enjoying swimming in the clear water, or engaging in watersports like scuba diving and snorkeling. Breathtaking views, gorgeous beaches, delectable food, plentiful wine, great nightlife, and year-round sunshine are the perks Porto Cervo offers its visitors. It is unquestionably one of the most fabulous destinations in the Mediterranean and one of the gems for a luxury Sardinia holiday.

Things to Do in Porto Cervo

Visit Chiesa di Stella Maris

The Church of Stella Maris in Porto Cervo, designed by Italian architect Michele Busiri Vici, one of the leading architects assigned by the Aga Khan Prince Karim Aga Khan IV to create Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda.

The Church of Stella Maris (Chiesa di Stella Maris) is a Catholic church in Porto Cervo, Italy. It was opened to the public in 1969. It is the delicate home for an immense collection of artwork and serves as a sublime example of the spectacular religious sites in Sardinia. Every angle seems to invite you to uncover this contemporary yet ancient treasure next to the luxurious yachts in the Porto Cervo Marina and the pristine blue waters of the Costa Smeralda. Italian architect and urban planner Michele Busiri Vici designed this gem back in 1960, and it has a distinct ability to blend in with the majestic scenery of Porto Cervo nearby (Vici also built Hotel Romazzino near Cala di Volpe and Hotel Lucia della Muntagna which is featured above). This religious site is undeniably impressive, but the most peculiar thing you should notice about this structure is that it is without corners and every wall radiates an incredible softness. As you take a visit to Chiesa di Stella Maris, it becomes evident that this religious site is simply incomparable to any other, in any part of Sardinia. The façade features a six stone monolith which appears to be shaped by the wind as it supports a long juniper beam. This site leads to an ancient path which traces all the way back to the port. With such an attractive water reservoir next to the Ivory shells, the proximity of Chiesa di Stella Maris is no doubt an impressive feature, but there is a lot more than just location to uncover here.
