About Spiaggia della Tartaruga
Walk about 650 meters from Cala Girgolu and you’ll find Spiaggia della Tartaruga, a small cove that’s better known as Turtle Beach. Its main feature, as its name suggests, is not the presence of sea turtles, but a granite rock that’s shaped like a turtle. The rock is one of the most photographed natural objects in this part of Sardinia. Spiaggia della Tartaruga really is just a small cove, with a small beach that’s about 20 meters long. It faces north-west, with beautiful views of Isola Tavolara, Isola Molara, Isolotto Rosso and the headlands of Porto San Paolo. You’ll see groups of polished granite rocks on both sides of the cove. That’s where you’ll want to go explore and spot some fish if you’d like to go snorkeling here. The colors of those same rocks will turn different hues of red around sunset, it’s an amazing thing to watch. Low hills serve as a backdrop, so you’ll be sheltered from the wind. In the exquisite turquoise waters, you’ll likely spot some people on paddle boats or kayaks here, which are available for rent at Cala Girgolu. Spiaggia della Tartaruga has no facilities, so bring something for shade, and a few drinks and snacks to get you through the day. If you plan on going here by car, take note that the parking area is located 300 meters south of Cala Girgolu. The rest of the trip to the cove will have to be done on foot. It will take you about half an hour to get there. Bring proper footwear. Given its size and popularity, Spiaggia della Tartaruga can get a little busy, so your best bet would be to go early in the morning, or after 3 PM in the afternoon (and stay until sunset!)
